Could anything have been more embarrassing? You could be at the door of the least popular munger in school, but overwhelmed with envy because, hey, at least he was doing something normal. In 8th grade, at the peak of childhood self-consciousness, I knocked on the door of a super popular, rich, "in" kid from my class and he answered the door. It was a nightmare made real. One of my top three fears, just between burning to death and being force fed bleach. Our territory had several towns outside my school district. Stress levels were directly related to how far from my school we would be. Guys, remember walking into a perfectly casual local diner mysteriously dressed up, accompanied by a ragtag group of similarly dressed up senior citizens, children, and general mouth breathers with whom you have some unknown, yet observable, connection, then having the waitress turn out to be the girl you would ask out if you were allowed to date? Maybe the Brother Reaching Out prays over the muffins for the group?, topping it off by leaving a 2 month old "Awake!" for a tip? Sound familiar? I'd like to hear anyone else's horror stories.

Did you secretly not want studies and rv's?
by new light ini remember going out in circus because it was what we did.
the idea of having to conduct a study or being responsible for a return visit and, therefore, eternal state of existence, caused knots in the stomach and massive dread.
actually having to commit to field circus long term with no hope of escape to save someone's life was a real downer.

Once they took the lit you were responsible to return with something to say. Ugh! What was your take on interested people?

What do you think of todays youth?
by dawg inas many of you know, i live in a college town and therefore i'm around people much younger than me almost all day.
here's one thing i've noticed, the youth today have left the god of the bible behind.
they have been brought up in a world where information is available at a very rapid rate and have already figured out the biblical god is a fairy tale.

Just today, a coworker and I were discussing the violent and depressive lyrics in the hard rock songs on the radio. It seems to me a lot of the heavier popular music is getting more and more violent. The lyrics basically tell kids to take weapons to school and take revenge on their "enemies". I know that when I was a kid, music and musicians had a big influence on everyone I knew. "Garbage in/Garbage out" I believe is the saying. Kids essentially reflect what is fed to them.

REINSTATED AND STILL SHUNNED!
by new boy ini was at a wedding last summer were i met an old friend.
he had been reinstated for 6 months, he was dfed for 4 years.. he had been an elder for 10 years before that, he had commited adultery with another "brothers" wife.
i asked him how it was going.

This happened to me. After reinstatement, nine years after the dfing, the more sincere folks were relatively warm toward me, but the popular, cliquey types merely tolerated me. If my brother was not highly ranked in the circle as he was, they probably would have not even acknowledged my presence. Oh well.
What really irks me is that a 45 year old scumbag who actually diddled his teenaged stepdaughter 2 or 3 years ago is freely associating with my brother and others. JWs have no individual consciences, and this proves it in graphic detail. Because this child molester is not currently sanctioned by the BOE, he is a "good guy". In the real world, this individual would be run out of town, and with good reason. Meanwhile, I (a non-pedophile) have not heard from my brother or any of his friends in years. Ya, great religion, guys!

A seed has been planted. It sounds like the info you gave her actually registered. Awesome! Hopefully this is only the first of many truths she will listen to.

It's nice to be up here in Maine...haven't seen a trail yet. They have been staggeringly obvious in other places I've lived. Normal jets will be taking off, using a lot of power and pumping as much exhaust, yet what little contrail they put out will evaporate in less than a minute. Meanwhile, other jets will be cruising, using much, much less power than a jet taking off, and they will be painting the sky with thick, billowy, straight, grid patterns (GRID PATTERNS!), keep their form for a frighteningly long time. This was observed in Phoenix, AZ, USA in a climate where rain evaporates before hitting the ground on hot days. The sinister kind of contrail does not evaporate as much as dissipate into a large form equal to a small/midsize natural cloud. I'm pretty sure there is some kind of plan here. I just haven't looked into it enough to know what.

did taze plan for a massive religion that appeals to only the downtrodden?
by Lotus65 indid taze when originally created this religion did he plan for the massive cult organization that it has become or was it mere chance and did he plan to prey on the weak and downtrodden people in society or was this originally supposed to encompass all people into "life saving" religion

We do know he planned a religion that was agressively anti-mainsteam, yet still bowed to the same God, sort of. This would appeal to those alienated from their church and, maybe, the social activities that were part of it. Has anyone seen a successful, connected, person from a loving family convert to JWism? The disfellowshipping would turn off almost anyone involved in a supportive family. It takes a certain kind of person to join a separatist religion, then take all the crap that comes with it, then make the move to dunk their life away. That person probably did not eat lunch with the popular kids.

How sweet is it to NOT be a JW?
by new light indo you ever revisit the old jw ways of thinking, and then compare it to the complete freedom that you have now?
do you remember judging and fearing the everyday activities of the people around you?
remember that dread of restating "your" position on holidays every few weeks, knowing you would just end up further alienated from coworkers?

Sirona,
Congratulations on the baby! I'm kind of a stranger here, so that was probably late in coming. It's great to hear you are living true to your heart, moreso than the masses, judging by your commitment to celebrating the sacred days at the core of the christian holidays. Very authentic. Just being ourselves is a wonderful thing.

Are We Doomed To Repeat Patterns?
by saywhat29 ingosh darnit, this is my attempt to pull off a minimus-esque thread that will eventually die, but just a question that has been dragging around in my head as of recently.
i've been on this psychoanalytic kick for some time (for such a time that i know 'psychoanalytic' is not the right term to use but it fooled enough of you when i said it, and that's all that matters)- especially about family dynamics, patterns, and relationships.
i've been analyzing myself recently and more importantly i've been thinking about myself and the history of my relationships with those i love.

Doomed? No. Inclined? Maybe. Whether we choose to acknowledge personality traits as inherited or not, the fact remains that they are ours to deal with. If you like how your parents ended up, then by all means feel free to live the life they tried to create for you. If not, then change yourself. The only thing we are really stuck with is the physical body. Everything else is a combination of thought, speech, and action, all three of which are completely under our control. Certain thought patterns may seem genetically ingrained, insurmountable, but will power and mental steadfastness will break us free.

Do you ever revisit the old JW ways of thinking, and then compare it to the complete freedom that you have now? I do. Do you remember judging and fearing the everyday activities of the people around you? Remember that dread of restating "your" position on holidays every few weeks, knowing you would just end up further alienated from coworkers? Having to dress up for the endless, thankless meetings and field service? How about wasting days off from work to attend the district convention, usually during the best weather of the summer? Ugh.
Take a minute once in a while to smell the roses if you have made the break. We can finally RELAX! We are free to fit in, even (gasp!) associate with whomever we choose. We spend our time away from the job just how we see fit, in ways that actually do our lives some good. We can perceive the underlying goodness that flows through most people, and our own inner goodness has been freed to be used in ways of our own choosing, no longer devoured by the insatiable succubus known as "sacred service". Spring and summer are on the way here in the Northern Hemisphere, and not one of our minutes need be wasted in the name of a false religious publishing company. I fart in your general direction, Watchtower Society.
